About the Song
The song you heard featured in the video above is a very special song to me. I wrote it after going through a devastating breakup. In fact, my entire album Dreamland is about one single breakup. But this song in particular was written while I was going through intense pain from the breakup.
It was my birthday weekend, which is always hard when you’re heartbroken. The person I wanted to be spending my birthday with was spending the weekend with another person. It was crushing.
I took a solo trip across Texas to try and get away from it all. But it ended up being the loneliest birthday I’ve ever had. After miles of driving I eventually ended up in a town called Wimberely, Texas, a charming town in the Texas hill country. I sat on a park bench, listening to the birds chirp around me and began strumming my guitar on my lap. Within moments the lyrics from this song started pouring out of me that I could barely write fast enough to keep up.
The loneliness was trapped inside of me, bursting to get out.
I sat on that park bench, listening to the birds chirp and finished writing Inside in one sitting. When we finally went into the studio to begin recording Dreamland, I knew that this song needed to be included. We decided to include the birds in the beginning of the song so that I would always be able to remember and visualize the setting where I wrote the song.
Since being released, Inside has become one of those songs that people have latched onto. With very little promotion it has become one of the most played songs on the album, which is surprising because it is what I would consider a deep cut (track 13 on Dreamland).
Whenever a friend of mine is going through a breakup, this is one of the songs I send them to help them get through it. Many have told me this song speaks to the center of the pain they feel during a breakup or loss. You can’t understand why it’s happening. You wish for anything else to be happening. You want so desperately to be loved by the person, but you know in your heart that they they’re gone. The enormity of the feelings you carry inside during loss is unfathomable. Sometimes just making it through a day is all you can do.
Inside is dedicated to anyone going through grief and loss. If this is you, then I hope this song soothes you and brings you some comfort in your pain. I’ve been where you are. There is light on the other side of this pain. You just need to make it through.
